SSC first announced the Tuatara in 2011.
[post_ads]The SSC Tuatara will reportedly finally make a production debut during Monterey Car Week at the end of August. It'll make appearances at several events during the automotive extravaganza, including The Quail on August 24, Concorso Italiano on August 25, Exotics on Canary Row on August 25, and the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance Concept Lawn on August 26. The company will announce performance and production details there, too.
SSC North America, previously known as Shelby SuperCars after founder Jerod Shelby, has had the Tuatara kicking around as a concept and prototypes since 2011. At the time, the vehicle was supposed to use a twin-turbo 6.9-liter V8 producing 1,350 horsepower and 1,280 pound-feet (1,733 Newton-meters) of torque. The automaker's latest teaser makes no mention of the powerplant but still promises the Tuatara has a top speed that can "easily surpass the current world record." For your edification, this means that the car can beat the Koenigsegg Agera RS' max velocity of 277.9 miles per hour (444.6 kph).

The Tuatara has taken quite a while to reach this point because deliveries were supposed to start in December 2013 or January 2014. The supercar is supposed to be a followup to the SSC Ultimate Aero that ended production in late 2012. In the final version, it used a twin-turbo 6.9-liter V8 with 1,300 hp (969 kW) and 1,004 lb-ft (1,359 Nm) that allowed for a top speed of 256.14 mph (412.22 kph).

After such a long leadup, we're definitely curious to see what the Tuatara is like in production form because the hypercar segment has changed a lot since SSC original announcement of the model.
